Aprilia is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer, one of seven brands owned by Piaggio, one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers.
Aprilia began its history with the production of scooters, but now it is better known as a manufacturer of racing motorcycles.
Aprilia was founded immediately after World War II by Albert Beggio, as a bicycle company in Noale, Italy, in the province of Venice.
Alberto's son, Ivano Beggio, became the owner of the company in 1968 and built the first 50 cc Aprilia motorcycle. The first Aprilia motorcycles were named Colibrì, Daniela and Packi. Later, the first Beetle off-road motorcycle was released, which was introduced in 1970 in two versions, with an engine capacity of 50 and 125 cm³ and remained in production for almost a decade.
In 1977, Aprilia first won the Italian Motocross Championship in 125th and 250th grades thanks to racer Ivan Alborgetti from Milan. The same pilot took part in the World Motocross Championship the following year and took sixth place in the overall standings, receiving two third places in individual races.
In the 80s of the XX century, the next stage of the evolution of Aprilia began. The range of models was expanded: for customers, trial bikes, enduro and road motorcycles with engine sizes from 50 to 600 cm³ were offered. In 1985, a cooperation agreement was signed with the Austrian company Rotax (later acquired by Bombardier) for the supply of engines. In the same year, Aprilia launched the 125 STX and 350 STX models. In 1986, Aprilia launched the AF1, a small sports model, and Tuareg, a large off-road motorcycle that participated in the Dakar rally.
In the wake of success, models were offered for sale in various versions: Aprila RS 50 class 50 cm³ (road bike), RX 50 (enduro) and Red Rose 50 (custom), all with a Minarelli liquid-cooled engine; 125 cm³ Aprilia RS125 (road bike), RX 125 (enduro) and Red Rose 125 (custom), all with Rotax engines, are equipped with a passive pneumatic control exhaust valve (the so-called RAVE2 valve, subsequently replaced by an electronically controlled valve) and finally , in the 250 cm³ RS 250 class with a Suzuki engine, it was a racing motorcycle that had a lot of fans, especially among young people.
In the 1990s, Aprilia Pegaso motorcycle models with 50.125 and 650 engines, and Aprilia Scarabeo and Leonardo scooters were successful in the market.
At the end of the decade, in 1998, the Aprilia RSV Mille and Aprilia Falco superbike were introduced, on which Rotax twin-cylinder engines of 990 & nbsp; cm³ with an innovative arrangement of cylinders at an angle of 60 °, which allowed the rational use of weight distribution. The following year, a limited version of the RSV Mille SP was released with a circulation of 150 copies, which allowed the team to take part in the Superbike World Championship.
The new century began with the acquisition in 2000 of the company two of the most famous brands in the history of Italian motorsport: Moto Guzzi and Moto Laverda.
Series production of Aprilia Caponord '(enduro), Aprilia RST1000 Futura (sports tour),' 'Aprilia Tuono' (naked) and Aprilia RSV 1000 superbike started.
In 2004, the acquisition of Aprilia and its subsidiaries by the Piaggio group, which also controls the Spanish manufacturers Gilera and Derbi, took place. As a result of the merger, the fourth manufacturer in the world in terms of motorcycle production was formed with a production capacity of 600,000 units per year, with a turnover of € 1.5 billion.
Since 2006, Aprilia began designing, developing, and manufacturing their own engines, breaking off a long relationship with Rotax, and since then all manufactured motorcycles have been working with Piaggio engines made 100% using Italian technology.
Ivano Baggio was for some time the "honorary president", but since 2006 he no longer plays any role in the company founded by his father.
