Derbi is a Spanish company that produces motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and recreational ATVs. One of the seven brands that is part of Piaggio.
Derbi's history began with a small bike shop in the village of Mouliet near Barcelona, founded in 1922 by Simeon Rabas and Singles. The main activity of the company was the repair and rental of bicycles until May 1944, when Singla registered a limited liability company called Bicicletas Rabasa for the purpose of bicycle production. The company proved to be very successful and in 1946 work began on a motorized version of the SRS (the first letters of the name of the founder of the company Simeón Rabasa i Singla). The model was so successful that it prompted a change of direction of the company, and on November 7, 1950, the company changed its name to Nacional Motor SA. Shortly before, in Barcelona at the trade show, the company unveiled its first real motorcycle, the Derbi 250.
The Derbi successfully competed in the World Road Ring Championships, winning the 50 cm 50 Championships in 1969, 1970 and 1972. When the 50cc class was increased to 80cc, the Derbi dominated for four consecutive seasons from 1986 to 1989 until the class was eliminated from the Grand Prix program. The company also succeeded in the 125cc class, winning the World Cup in 1971, 1972, 1988, 2008 and 2010.
Unlike many Spanish motorcycle manufacturers, Derbi have successfully withstood Spain's entry into the European Community. Simeon Rabas and Singla died in 1988, but the company remained independent until 2001, when it was purchased by the Piaggio Group.
